Georgia Medical Cannabis Law Changed July 1, 2026
Georgia’s medical cannabis program changed significantly on July 1, 2026. The new law updated qualifying conditions, expanded available products, changed THC possession limits, extended card validity, and introduced new terminology.
“Low THC Oil” Is Now “Medical Cannabis”
Georgia now uses the terms Medical Cannabis, Georgia Medical Cannabis Patient Registry, and Medical Cannabis Card.
Existing patients do not need a replacement card simply because the terminology changed.
18 Qualifying Medical Conditions
EXPANDED MEDICAL CANNABIS PRODUCTS
Effective July 1, 2026, Georgia significantly expanded the forms of medical cannabis available to registered patients.
Authorized products may now include:
- Oils and tinctures
- Capsules and other ingestible products
- Transdermal patches
- Lotions and other topical preparations
- Vaporizer products
- Cannabis plant material intended for vaporization
Patients must be 21 or older to purchase products intended for vaporization. Vaporization of authorized medical cannabis products is permitted, subject to applicable restrictions.
IMPORTANT: Smoking or combustion of medical cannabis remains prohibited under Georgia law.
NEW THC & POSSESSION LIMITS
Georgia has replaced the former 5% THC concentration limit with a milligram-based system.
MEDICAL CANNABIS CARDS ARE VALID FOR 5 YEARS
Important exception: Under Georgia law, patients with incurable or irreversible conditions are not subject to the annual certification requirement.
STATE MEDICAL CANNABIS CARD FEE
After your physician certifies you for the Georgia Medical Cannabis Patient Registry and the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) verifies your information, DPH will email you instructions for paying the state Medical Cannabis Card fee. State Card Fee: $30 Patients who pay through the DPH secure online payment portal are charged an additional $3.75 service fee, for a total online payment of $33.75. Patients may alternatively pay the $30 card fee by money order and avoid the online service fee. Payment must be submitted within 60 days. If payment is not received within 60 days, DPH will cancel the card and the patient must contact their physician to have it reinstated.
Receiving Your Card
After payment is processed, DPH ships the Medical Cannabis Card by UPS to the mailing address on file. A signature is required for delivery. DPH advises patients to allow up to 10 business days after payment is processed to receive their card. Patients who use a P.O. Box or do not have a permanent or secure mailing address will have their card sent to a designated local health department for pickup.
WE ACCEPT MANY MAJOR INSURANCE PLANS
The $30 Georgia Medical Cannabis Card fee is a state fee paid directly to the Georgia Department of Public Health and is not covered by health insurance.
However, Medical THC of Georgia accepts many major health insurance plans for the physician office visit and medical evaluation used to determine whether a patient qualifies for the Georgia Medical Cannabis Patient Registry.
Normal insurance requirements, including copays, deductibles, coinsurance, network restrictions, and other plan provisions, may apply.
The cost of medical cannabis products purchased from a licensed dispensary is also separate from the physician office visit.
WHERE CAN I PURCHASE MEDICAL CANNABIS?
Registered patients and caregivers with an active Georgia Medical Cannabis Card may purchase medical cannabis from a dispensary licensed by the Georgia Access to Medical Cannabis Commission or from an authorized independent pharmacy.
Medical cannabis products sold through Georgia’s regulated program are laboratory tested and must meet state requirements for labeling and product safety.
Medical THC of Georgia does not sell medical cannabis and is not affiliated with any particular dispensary, pharmacy, or cannabis manufacturer.
